Additional Services Noninvasive Dynamic Cabling
For over a century, tree care experts have used steel cable to secure damaged trees, control structural weaknesses in high-value specimens, as well as reduce risk from hazards. Decades of increased understanding of trees revealed that limbs allowed to move freely will form reaction wood in areas to reduce chances of splitting & other failure. Restrictive cabling could actually lead to weakening of trees that grew dependant on such support. Also, securing the cables to the tree with bolts was an invasive act to tree tissues.
Matthew's Tree Service Inc. provides the modern dynamic cabling method where needed. This minimizes the risk of failure at co-dominant stems, or "V crotches", while still allowing for reaction wood to form. The introduction of a shock absorber into a cabling system allows for a slack cable that is only called upon during extreme loading. During this loading event the shock absorber is activated, thus dampening the jerking effect which otherwise creates excessive loading at cable anchor points. The slack in the cable leaves the support undetected by the tree, so it is not used as a crutch as with permanently rigid steel cables. This allows for reaction wood to form at the week union, permitting the tree to aid with its own inherent defense mechanisms and reduce risk of failure. Growth loops are incorporated into the system, so as the cabled limbs grow in diameter the system stays in check.
Dynamic cabling is not susceptible to hardware failure during increased loads (e.g. ice loading, high winds) and allows limbs a natural freedom to exercise while ultimately limiting their movement. Because application does not require drilling into wood, thus exposing the tree to other risks, such cabling is ideal for aging and high-value trees.
Root Excavation with AIR-SPADE®
Certain situations may call for removal of soil surrounding tree roots for root crown examination, relief of compaction, or aeration. Matthew's Tree Service Inc. can fill this need with the use of the revolutionary AIR-SPADE®, that produces a supersonic air stream to quickly break up soil with minimum disturbance of roots. This compressed air tool leaves a cleaner job site than methods using water to wash away soil, and is significantly safer to the tree than digging into the root crown.
The AIR-SPADE® breaks up even hard clays, but will not damage roots, pipes or utilities. We have also found this method helpful in viewing plant disease or root decay occurring below the grade, as well as working organic material around the root system. Root crown excavation may be a follow-up to initial noninvasive evaluations of root systems with our Tree Radar Unit.
Fine Pruning
Pruning is a practice that we take very seriously at Matthew's Tree Service Inc.. We firmly believe that the long-term value gained by properly timed and placed pruning cuts far outway the costs. Such pruning may be on ornamental trees to meet the aesthetic needs of our customers, or training cuts of young trees to avoid future structural problems and the cost and risk associated with them. Pruning is yet another service we provide that has lasting benefits for our customers in the form of tree health and safety. |
